Aberdeenshire Skier Takes 6th Place at World Under 23 Championships
On a tough course with the sun shining but the temperature only -17C Andrew went out seeded 20th (of 68 competitors) but had the fastest times through the first half of the race. Starting after him in the time trial event were World Cup skiers who were being given Andrew's times as they went past their coaches so they knew what they had to aim for. The Russian team responded to the challenge and the top ranked skier Evgeny Belov eventually led a Russian clean sweep of gold, silver and bronze medals. Norway took 4th and Canadian Kevin Sandau just pipped Andrew to 5th place by an agonising three tenths of a second.
At 20 years old Andrew is in his first year in the Under 23 category. The Championships continue until Monday with sprint and pursuit races still to come.
