High winds and heavy snow, challenged many athletes on Day Four of the English Alpine Championships, hosted by Snowsport England in Bormio, Italy. Excellent performances from Yasmin Cooper, from Chichester, saw her bring home a first place podium.
The championships have seen a host of excellent athletes tackle the 235m steep pistes in the 16th annual race, seeing Bormio open its doors to Snowsport England and the sponsors Energiapura, Ski Racing Supplies, Racer Ready, SkiWire, EventGeeks, Vital Agency, Cotswold and Fine Designs.
First placed overall British Ski Academy racer, Yasmin Cooper, aged 13 achieved a time of 47:97, and said: “It feels really good. The course felt really smooth and I’m really pleased but really tired now.” Yasmin travels to Slovenia at the end of the week to continue her race season.
The Children’s age category participants took part in the Giant Slalom Race in Bormio, Italy with the onlooking crowd cheering, and parents watching from behind their hands as their children made the terrifying descent down Stella Alpina piste.
Championship hopeful, Jess Anderson, from Oundle, narrowly missed out on a podium place due to a fall in the latter part of the course, ‘I’m disappointed. Something happened, I can’t remember but I’ve hurt my back. I’m gutted. Next is the Super G and I’ve got to keep going, I want to podium.’
Chief Executive of Snowsport England, Tim Fawke, said ‘It was tough out there, but we saw some good racing and we are pleased with the success of the English Alpine Championships so far. Hopefully people at home are being inspired to visit their local slope.’
Elsewhere in the Boys Race, Robert Poth from Potters Bar came first in an exhilarating Giant Slalom competition. In the Junior Giant Slalom race, Ambition competitor Imogen Taylor, age 17 finished first in her age category and was the highest placed British female. The third day of the English Alpine Championships saw a clean sweep on the podium places for Great Britain in the age group categories, including second placed Team England athlete Tom Doyle.
The championships have seen a host of excelling athletes tackle the steep pistes in the 16th annual race, seeing Bormio open its doors to Snowsport England and the sponsors Energiapura, Ski Racing Supplies, Racer Ready, SkiWire, EventGeeks, Vital Agency and Fine Designs.
Third placed overall Darcie Mead, aged 15 from Kingston Upon Thames with a time of 1:15:82, said: “I didn’t expect to win or anything. I was just going to ski because I enjoy it but to win is a bonus.”
The Junior Racers took part in the Super Giant Slalom Race in Bormio, Italy with a thrilling drop, ensuring the respect of the on looking spectators.
Team England athlete, Tom Doyle with a time of 1:16:04 said, ‘Conditions were good and everything was in line for a good result. Bormio have done really well setting the races up. If would say if you want to get into skiing, I would say go for it!’
Elsewhere in the Mini’s competition British Ski Academy racer George Case, aged 10 finished third overall and was first placed British Skier. Evolution skier Toby Case, aged 9 finished in fourth place, losing his tooth at the start and finishing a gutsy performance amongst a host of international competitors, showing his fellow racers how it should be done.
