Each of the five proficiency levels can be achieved either on snow, or on roller skis (for cross-country) or artificial slopes for Telemark, and some of the skills required do not apply in all cases (for example, snowploughing does not apply for roller skiing; double poling does not apply on artificial slopes). In the 1 Star to 3 Star categories, some of the skills are compulsory while others are optional, although the candidate will need to be assessed against some of the optional skills in order to achieve the necessary pass mark.
