The English Alpine Championships is Snowsport England’s premier event and is held in Bormio, Italy during February half term each year. The event is run by a team of over 20 volunteers. This time the organising committee is looking for people to join the team of race officials to work on the hill, and also potentially to help with driving the equipment van between the UK and the resort at each end of the week.

Hill Team Role

What does the Hill Team job involve?

We already have most of the race officials we need, but when we are running two or even three races in a day we have a busy schedule with a lot to cover. We are therefore looking for some additional people who can handle on-hill officials’ roles during the races as well as support the organisation in various ways including in the race office or with preparation of kit for the following day. What role(s) you actually get on the hill will depend on experience across the team and will be mapped out nearer the time.

What costs would SE cover?

All travel, hotel and meals are paid for, so apart from drinks, personal insurance and a lot of calories it isn’t going to cost you much!

What do you get out of it?

If you are prepared to give up a week of your time, in return you will get the chance to be a part of one of the biggest events on the British Alpine ski calendar. Most of our team come back year after year, so there is clearly something special about being involved with this event.

What are the timings?

We fly out to Milan Linate on Friday 12th February from London Heathrow, returning on Saturday 20th February.

What are the requirements for the role?

  • A minimum of 17 years old
  • Qualified race official, preferably operating at least at level 2
  • Be a team player
  • Sense of humour (not essential but helps!)

Van Driver Role

To run the championships, we have a lot of kit that needs to be taken out to Bormio from the UK. We hire a panel van to do this and are looking for a couple of people to drive it out and back.

What are the timings?

We normally pick up the van on the Tuesday before the championships start and set off on the Wednesday to arrive with advance party on the Thursday. Then return on the Saturday, arriving home on the Sunday for the van to be returned on the Monday.

What costs would SE cover?

All expenses on the way out and way back from resort, including food and any overnight accommodation. If you are not also part of the hill team of race officials then you would need to cover your own costs through the week of the championships.

What do you get out of it?

In return you would get free travel out and back from Bormio, probably with the scope to carry an agreed amount of your own kit with you in the van. This opportunity might suit someone who wishes to be out in Bormio for the week anyway ‘doing their own thing’.
