We are deeply saddened by the news of the loss of Snowsport England Board Director, ERSA Treasurer, and Welwyn Ski Race Club stalwart Mike Danbury.

Mike’s contribution to the sport, from racing and coaching, to more recently club organising, volunteering and re-energising Welwyn Ski Club, is something that far outweighs that which most of us could ever hope to emulate.

Mike had been a regular feature at ERSA Summer League Races over the last few decades and was one of the Masters to try to beat.

His work at Welwyn Ski Race Club and the Welwyn Ski Slope led to increased attendance and established coaching for many new to the sport. His belief in the slope and keeping skiing at Welwyn helped establish the “Save Our Slope” campaign which the Club and Region will continue to support with the same passion Mike had.

Our thoughts are with Annie, Hannah and family at this very difficult time.

Message from our Chair Jamie Horner:

“Mike’s kindness and humility coupled with his great energy and enthusiasm and extensive knowledge and experience of our sport enabled him to make an invaluable contribution to Snowsport England at all levels. He will be sorely missed by us all. Our thoughts are with Annie, Hannah and family at this very difficult time.”

Message from ERSA Chair Stephen Metheringham:

“I, as many in the ERSA Region and at Welwyn ski Race Club, will miss his valuable and sensible approach, words of wisdom and encouragement.  Mike’s commitment to the sport at grassroots level was infectious and encouraged many at all ages to participate and race”

One of Mike’s numerous ski friends echoed the sentiments spoken by many:

“Such sad news.  Mike was the genuine gentleman.  Always positive, full of fun and such a great support.  His fellow racers loved to take him on in races and had many a joke with Mike.  Such a sad loss for us all”
